How to Declutter for the Holidays

Christmas Tree and moving boxes

At this time of year we are often anxious to start decorating our home for the holidays and we are sometimes faced with a lack of space.  Regular everyday items are replaced by seasonal pieces.  It's the perfect opportunity to go through these items you are removing to see whether you wish to keep, sell, donate or recycle them.

For those pieces you can't do without, self storage is a way to declutter your space without giving up pieces you love.  A climate controlled storage space offers the best protection for your belongings.

DECLUTTER DECOR

Declutter your current decor prior to bringing out your holiday decorations. Go through your decorations and seasonal items to determine if some need replacing, repairing or updating.  Get rid of those you haven't used in the last few seasons or no longer see value in keeping.

Make a plan for each room you are decorating.  Set a theme or colour scheme or both.  Decide, based on your plan, if some shopping is necessary.  Have fun with it!

DECLUTTER ONE ROOM AT A TIME

Start with a plan on the best way to declutter and always start with one room.. Decide which decorations or seasonal pieces you wish to use and where they should be optimally placed.  Then determine which items need to be removed to make space for the displays.  Declutter along the way.

SET A TIMELINE

Designate the order of the rooms you will be touching.  Store the items you are keeping for each room separately so resetting each room to "normal" is quick and easy.  Remember to label what you are storing.

SORT AS YOU GO

Use the three box/bin method when decluttering:  KEEP - to return to the room after the holidays, TOSS - sell, donate or garbage, STORE - put in labelled storage boxes or bins to store.  Renting a Self Storage unit is perfect for this category.

At Riel Park RV & Self Storage we sell moving and packing supplies for all your storage needs.

DONATE OR RECYCLE

Anything in the TOSS box/bin should be sorted and allocated to:  Donation items packed up delivered, Recycled items removed and taken to recycling and garage disposed of; get rid of these as soon as possible.  Don't leave piles around the house that distract from your decoration efforts.

ORGANIZE YOUR KITCHEN

Whether you are hosting a holiday gathering or not, organize and declutter your kitchen to make holiday meals more enjoyable.  Start by decluttering your countertops and then work on one cabinet or drawer at a time.

CLEAN OUT THE COAT CLOSET

If you are having guests over it's a great time to declutter your entry coat closet to make room for your guest's coats.  Use baskets or small bins to organize your gloves and mitts.  Donate any items you no longer need or want.

DECLUTTER TOYS

Get the kids involved with decluttering and cleaning their bedrooms.  Let them know they need to make room for the gifts they may be receiving this Christmas.

ENJOY the season and the beauty you have created in your home for the Holidays!

When the Christmas season is over and you have no room in the garage or attic for your decorations, consider renting a St. Albert storage unit.  At Riel Park RV & Self Storage we have unheated storage units and indoor heated storage units of various sizes for all your storage solution needs.
