Safety Tips For Moving Safely

Moving into a new place can be very exciting and, at the same time, the prospect of moving all your stuff can be daunting.  One thing to remember when you are in the midst of it all, is moving your items safely, both for you and them.

DRAW UP A PLAN

Packing unused or seldom used items and off-season pieces early can take away some of the pressure as the moving day looms closer.  For boxes that you have packed prior to moving day, locate an area in your home that is low traffic and on the main floor close to an exit to stack and store them.  You will want them out of the way until moving day.  

Pack one room at a time and mark your boxes well so you know where they should be taken when you arrive at your new location.  "Misc. Items" is not a well marked box.

DO NOT OVERPACK YOUR BOXES

If you have heavy items put them in several smaller boxes to evenly distribute their weight.  Too heavy of a box can compromise the integrity of the box and cause injuries to the person attempting to lift it.

PROTECT SHARP OBJECTS

Wrap sharp objects so you are not injured and other items are not damaged when transporting them.  This includes knives, scissors and garden tools.

DRESS FOR THE MOVE

Footwear should be non slip and secure.  Tripping on laces or stubbing your toe in flip flops while carrying boxes can cause nasty injuries.

Your clothing should be appropriate for the weather, keeping you warm and dry in winter, while being comfortable for ease of movement when bending and lifting.  Again, you don't want to be tripping or catching loose fitting clothing as you carry boxes or furniture during the move.

LIFT PROPERLY

Rest often and stretch between lifts.  Keeping your muscles loose can prevent strains and other injuries.  If you have problems with joints, such as knees or back, pay close attention to how they are feeling throughout the day.

Keep yourself hydrated and stop to eat a regular meal.  Being tired and hungry can influence good decision making.  Be well rested before the move and, if possible, plan to make your move gradually over several days.

KEEP A CLEAR PATH

Keep hallways and stairs clear allowing for a clear path to the entrance.  The move will go smoother with less chance of injury due to twisting and turning your body around stuff that is in the way.  Avoid the potential for trips and falls.

If moving during the winter, ensure the walks and driveway are clear of ice and snow.

HAVE KIDS AND ANIMALS AT A DIFFERENT LOCATION

During a move you do not want to be concerned about where the kids and/or pets are and what they are doing.  If possible have them at friend's or relative's place where they feel safe and you are not worried about them.  Have them say goodbye to the old place before they leave and when the move is complete include them in saying hello to their new home.

HIRE PROFESSIONALS IF NEEDED

If you are moving a full household, it is often practical to hire professionals to move you; even if you are just getting them to move the furniture and larger, heavier items.  They are experienced at moving stuff out of and into spaces that seem difficult for you.

STORE YOUR STUFF BETWEEN MOVES

On occasion it happens that you need to move out of one place before your new place is ready for move in.  Store your stuff in a secure storage unit for the interim.  This will allow you to gradually move out of the self storage unit and into your new home.
